N2 The Journey is that musical statement: a quantum leap for Dunn-kind. It is a journey fully informed by Africa: The Motherland of us all – bedrock cradle of civilization. As such, the music stretches from the lilting essences of percussion and a cappella voice to vibrant blends of music across stylistic lineages stretching from jazz to rock. There are touchstones to the vibrations of The Fire including a hair-raising revisit to “Reasons” and a new instrumental that will surely remind some of “Let’s Groove.” Ultimately, there is so much more.
It is a journey blessed by the presence of old friends like Ronnie & Hubert, Beloyd, Foley and Yungo, as well as newer friends like Sheldon, Procton and a hillside neighbor named Stanley Clarke. It is a journey where an older brother reached back to a younger brother whose outstretched fingers extended back…with a song.
Most heart-melting, it is a journey dipped in the sweet swirling caramel of love as, through it all, Larry is joined by his beautiful wife, Luisa Dunn – by his side from friend to partner for 28 years now, assisting and contributing in every way. As one, they are the quintessential lovers that do everything together – work and play – laughing all the way. So bewitching is Larry’s beloved “Lulu” that she moved the man to poetry (spoken in his best basso profondo a la Barry White) as well as a rapturous ivory expedition on the song “Walk on the Water.” Larry’s & Luisa’s union is a pan cultural music ministry buoyed by songs of hope, healing, joy, the synchronicity of spirits and the milk of human kindness compassion work yet to be done. Pay close attention to the lyrics of two songs that Luisa sings: a cover of the 1987 club smash “Twilight World” (originally written and recorded by the U.K. trio Swing Out Sister) and the album closing original “Madness” which speaks to the adversities we are all facing and faithfully praying to get through to “the other side” – the ultimate destination of our journey.
